Gossiping and Backbitting

Gossiping otherwise known as backbiting or slandering is a grave sin in Islam. Even though it is an evil, yet it is common everywhere. Although it is needless to say, we are all guilty of this crime some more than the others. Gossiping is present everywhere and some people openly admit that if it weren't for gossiping it would be hard to come up with an exciting conversation. In fact according to evolutionary psychology gossiping is defined as a means of stirring up conversation and aiding in large group.

Allah says:

"Behold, what you received in on your tongues, and said out of your tongues, and said out of your mouth things which you had no knowledge; and you thought it to be a light matter, while it was most serious in the sight of Allah."(Q 24:15).

Spreading rumours regarding others could ultimately lead them to destruction. Allah says this act is like eating your brother's flesh:

“Believers, avoid most of suspicion, for in some cases suspicion is a crime. Do not spy (on one another), nor backbite one another. Would anyone of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Surely you would loathe it. Have fear of Allah. He is forgiven and Merciful.” (Qur'an 49:12).

It is not all that you read in the media that is true. Somebody once said “if you want to sell a lie, take it to the press.” If others engage in spreading rumours about other people like in the case of the celebrities or any other popular figure, please let us not join the bandwagon. Remember that these people also have families.

May Allah lead us to the right path.
